It has been known for a while that FCA decided to cease production of the Dodge Dart by the end of 2016. However, rumor has it that Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne plans to find a viable replacement for this slow-selling sedan, as well as the Chrysler 200 which is going to stick around only a year longer. Ever since it arrived for the 2013 model year, the Dart has been struggling to meet its sales targets, which eventually resulted in the company’s decision to axe the model. Several sources are now speculating that Fiat Chrysler intends to offer a rebadged version of the Dart to its North American buyers. If that pans out, we might get to see the 2018 Dodge Dart hitting the market under another nameplate just as the stockpile of the current model runs out by mid-2017.
New Dodge Dart Features
According to a recent report, the 2018 Dodge Dart could be replaced by the Fiat Viaggio which is currently sold on the Chinese market. Both the Dart and Viaggio are actually based on the Alfa Romeo Giullieta that rides on the Fiat Compact Platform. While these two models share most of their exterior and interior design, what sets them apart is the Viaggio’s lower-cost suspension. As the Fiat sedan is soon to enter its second generation, we expect the Dart’s successor to feature a refreshed sheet metal that’s more in line with the contemporary design language found in this segment. However, the changes will be mostly evolutionary, so the 2018 Dart is not likely to stray too far from the outgoing version. There will be more substantial enhancements when it comes to the interior, though. We expect to see improved materials as well as FCA’s latest technological solutions.
2018 Dart Engine Range
As for the mechanical department, details have yet to be revealed. Some of the recent reports suggest that the entry-level engine might come as a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while a turbocharged 1.4-liter unit should provide a fuel economy surpassing 40 miles per gallon. On top of that, we expect a base Hurricane turbo four-cylinder to be offered, generating between 240 and 260 horsepower. As far as the transmission is concerned, it’s still not clear whether the 2018 Dodge Dart will keep the six-speed automatic or adopt a more expensive nine-speed gearbox.
2018 Dodge Dart Release Date
Although the company has yet to issue official statements concerning the release of the 2018 Dodge Dart, we believe it could hit the showrooms sometime in mid-2017.
